Directory Website Build

A searchable WordPress directory with filters, a map and paid listings, loaded with up to 500 of your entries.

Running a directory from a spreadsheet or shared document breaks down once people start searching and asking to be listed. Directory Website Build puts your listings on a WordPress site with search, filters and a map. We import up to 500 entries, build listing, category and location pages, and let owners submit and edit their own entries, free or paid.

  • Search with up to six filters and a map view
  • Up to 500 listings imported from your spreadsheet
  • Owners submit and edit entries on free or paid plans

What it is

Directory Website Build is a WordPress directory or listings website with search, up to 6 filters, a map view and listing, category and location pages. We import up to 500 listings from your spreadsheet, set up free and paid submissions through Stripe or PayPal, add schema markup and write an editor guide.

Why businesses buy it

A directory is only useful if people can find the right listing fast. That takes good filters, a map, clean pages for each category and location, and listings that stay current. Keeping them current by hand is slow, so here listing owners submit and edit their own entries. Paid plans let you charge for a place. We import your spreadsheet, so you launch with real content rather than an empty site. Search, filters, the map, submissions and payments are tested before launch, and a written editor guide shows your team how to run it.

Problems this solves

Your listings sit in a spreadsheet nobody outside the team can search

We import up to 500 listings onto a WordPress site with search, up to six filters and a map view. Visitors narrow results by category, location or your own fields.

Updating listings by email takes hours every week

Listing owners submit and edit their own entries through a form. You decide which plans are free and which are paid.

There are no category or location pages, so the directory is hard to find

Listing, category and location templates give every entry and area its own page. Schema markup on listing pages and a connected Search Console help search engines read them.

Charging for listings means chasing invoices by hand

Paid plans run through Stripe or PayPal in your name. A paid submission is tested before launch, so the first real payment works.

A good fit if

You run a niche directory, association member list or local provider network, and the listings sit in a spreadsheet.
Visitors need to narrow results by category, location or your own fields, and see them on a map.
You want listing owners to add and update their own entries, with the option to charge for a place.
Your launch fits within 500 listings and six search filters.

Not the right fit if

You take bookings for your own services rather than listing other providers. See Booking Website.
You want search landing pages built from your data, without owner submissions. See Programmatic SEO Build.
You need a marketplace where users message each other, book or receive payouts. Start with a Discovery Sprint.
You sell members access to gated articles and downloads. See Membership Website.

How it works

  1. At intake we review your spreadsheet and agree the listing fields, up to six search filters, the categories and locations, and your free and paid plans.
  2. We design the home page, search results and listing layouts, plus up to eight standard pages, and send them for your review.
  3. Listing, category and location templates are built on WordPress with search, filters and a map view, and listing pages get schema markup.
  4. Up to 500 listings are imported from your spreadsheet, and the submission form is connected to Stripe or PayPal for paid plans.
  5. We test search, filters, the map, submissions and payments, connect analytics and Search Console, and make two rounds of revisions.
  6. The directory goes live, your team gets a written editor guide, and 30 days of post-launch support begins.

What you provide within 72 hours

Your portal lists these the moment you order. Delivery starts the working day after everything is in and your access is checked.

  • Hosting and domain access by invite or a key you control, or approval to set them up in your name.
  • Your listings in a spreadsheet, with one row per listing.
  • Your logo, brand colors and photos.
  • Stripe or PayPal account access, shared by invite.
  • One person who approves the design and content.
The 72-hour rule. Send everything on your checklist, including access, within 72 hours of ordering so your build starts on time.

What you receive at handover

  • A WordPress directory site with up to eight standard pages
  • Listing, category and location templates, with schema markup on listing pages
  • Search with up to six filters and a map view
  • Up to 500 listings imported from your spreadsheet
  • A submission form with free and paid plans through Stripe or PayPal

Expected benefits and how to measure them

  • Helps visitors find the right listing quickly
  • Can turn listings into income through paid plans
  • Cuts the admin of updating entries by hand
Listing views
Track listing page views and filter or map use in analytics each month.
Paid submissions
Count new paid plans in Stripe or PayPal each month after launch.
Owner updates
Compare edits made by listing owners with edits your own team still makes.

Before you start: Note how many listings you hold today, how often they change and how long updates take. Record any income from listings before launch.

These are things to track, not promised results. Outcomes depend on your data, your team and your market.

Running costs

The build is a one-time payment. After launch, expect ~$20–60/month for WordPress hosting, a directory plugin licence and map usage, billed by each provider. Your domain is billed by your registrar, and Stripe or PayPal take their own fees on paid listings. Every account stays in your name.

Keep it running

A directory accepts submissions from the public and takes payments, so it needs regular care. After the support period, that care is handled by webcare24, our WordPress care brand, covering updates, backups, security and fixes. There is no Upmark maintenance fee. Your team manages listings and plans day to day.

Questions about this product

How many listings can the directory website hold at launch?

Up to 500, imported from your spreadsheet. We map each column to a listing field, a category, a location or one of up to six filters. The 500 limit applies to the import we do for you. If you have more listings at launch, tell us at checkout and the extra import is quoted through a Change Quote.

Can I charge businesses to be listed in my directory?

Yes. The submission form supports free and paid plans, and payments go through Stripe or PayPal into an account in your name. You set the plans and prices at intake, and we test a paid submission before launch. Stripe and PayPal charge their own transaction fees, which they bill directly, not through us.

Do you write or collect the listings for my directory?

No. You supply the listings in a spreadsheet, one row per listing, with the details and photos you want shown. We import them and check how they look on the site. Collecting listings, contacting businesses and writing listing text are outside this build. After launch, owners can add and edit their own entries.

Will my directory listings show up in Google search?

Nobody can promise that, but the site is built to be indexed. Each listing, category and location gets its own search-friendly page, listing pages carry schema markup, and analytics and Search Console are connected. Rankings depend on content quality and competition. For ongoing search work after launch, SEO Essentials is a natural next step.

Can visitors message listing owners or book through the directory?

Not in this build. Messaging and bookings between users add accounts, notifications and moderation, so they are quoted separately through a Change Quote. Note what you need at checkout. If you take appointments for your own business rather than for listed providers, Booking Website is the closer fit.

Who owns the directory site and the listing data?

You do. The site runs on hosting in your name, the domain stays with your registrar, and listing payments land in your own Stripe or PayPal account. The listing data started as your spreadsheet and stays yours. You buy the directory plugin licence directly, and you can remove our access at any time.

Who maintains the directory website after it launches?

We support it for 30 days after launch for anything not working as agreed. After that, webcare24, our WordPress care brand, handles updates, backups, security and fixes. There is no Upmark maintenance fee. Your team manages listings, plans and pages day to day, using the written editor guide.

Is a directory website different from a normal WordPress business website?

Yes. A WordPress Business Website presents one company through its own pages. A directory presents many listings, so it needs search, filters, a map, templates for listings, categories and locations, and a way for owners to submit entries. If you only need pages about your own business, WordPress Business Website is the simpler choice.
