Shopify Custom Theme

A Shopify theme designed and coded for your brand, with sections your team rearranges without a developer.

Your Shopify store has grown, but its template still looks like many other stores and fights the layouts you want. Shopify Custom Theme replaces it with a theme built for your brand. We design up to eight templates in Figma, code up to fifteen reusable sections, check your apps, and test everything on a duplicate theme before customers see it.

What it is

Shopify Custom Theme is a Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme designed and coded for your brand rather than adapted from a template. It covers up to 8 templates designed in Figma, up to 15 custom sections in Liquid, product page blocks, app checks, a speed and accessibility report, and testing on a duplicate theme before publishing.

Why businesses buy it

A template gets a new store selling fast, which is why Shopify Store Build uses one. Established brands hit its limits. Product pages cannot show bundles or upsells the way you want, sections do not match your brand, and each workaround adds another app. A custom theme fixes that at the root. We design your key templates, then code reusable sections and product page blocks in Liquid. Up to five existing apps are checked, and speed and accessibility are tested on a duplicate theme, so your live store keeps trading until you publish.

Problems this solves

The store still looks like the template it launched on

We design up to eight templates in Figma for your brand, then code them as your own theme. Two rounds of revisions shape the design before coding.

Product pages cannot show variants, bundles or upsells the way you sell

Product page blocks for variants, bundles or upsells are built as specified. They sit in the theme itself rather than in extra apps.

Every layout change needs a developer

Up to fifteen custom sections can be added, moved and removed in the theme editor. A written editor guide shows your team how.

Switching themes feels too risky on a live store

Everything is built on a duplicate theme, with app, speed, accessibility and mobile checks. Customers see the new theme only after you approve it.

A good fit if

Your Shopify store is established and has outgrown the template it started on.
You want product pages with custom blocks for variants, bundles or upsells.
Your team wants to arrange page layouts in the theme editor without a developer.
Your design needs fit within eight templates and fifteen custom sections.

Not the right fit if

You are new to Shopify and need the store set up and products loaded. See Shopify Store Build.
You need a headless storefront or several stores. Start with a Discovery Sprint.
Your design works but pages load slowly. See Website Speed and Core Web Vitals Sprint.
You are moving to Shopify from another platform. See Store Migration.

How it works

  1. You add us as a collaborator with theme permissions and share brand guidelines, photos, examples you like and the apps the store must keep.
  2. We design up to eight templates in Figma, such as home, collection, product, cart and content pages, with two rounds of revisions.
  3. The theme is coded in Liquid as an Online Store 2.0 theme, with up to fifteen custom sections and the product page blocks you specified.
  4. Up to five existing apps are checked with the new theme, and speed, accessibility and mobile checks run on a duplicate theme.
  5. Once you approve, the theme is published and the code goes into a Git repository you own.
  6. Your team gets a written editor guide, and 30 days of post-launch support starts.

What you provide within 72 hours

Your portal lists these the moment you order. Delivery starts the working day after everything is in and your access is checked.

  • Shopify collaborator access with theme permissions.
  • Your brand guidelines, photos and examples of stores or pages you like.
  • The list of apps the store must keep working with.
  • One person who approves the design.
The 72-hour rule. Send everything on your checklist, including access, within 72 hours of ordering so your build starts on time.

What you receive at handover

  • Figma designs for up to eight templates
  • A custom Online Store 2.0 theme coded in Liquid, with up to fifteen sections
  • Product page blocks for variants, bundles or upsells as specified
  • App checks and a speed and accessibility check report
  • Theme code in a Git repository you own
  • A written editor guide and 30 days of post-launch support

Expected benefits and how to measure them

  • Gives the store a design that matches the brand
  • Lets your team change layouts without a developer
  • Can reduce reliance on apps that patch the template
Conversion rate
Compare Shopify's conversion rate report for the months before and after the new theme.
Add-to-cart rate
Track sessions with an add to cart in Shopify analytics, before and after launch.
Mobile speed
Compare the launch speed report with a test of the old theme run before work starts.

Before you start: Run a speed test and note conversion and add-to-cart rates on the current theme. List the apps you use to patch layouts.

These are things to track, not promised results. Outcomes depend on your data, your team and your market.

Running costs

The theme is a one-time build, and its code is yours, so there is no theme licence to renew. After launch you keep paying for a Shopify plan and any apps you choose, billed by Shopify and the app makers. Those accounts stay with you.

Keep it running

Shopify hosts the store, but apps and the platform keep shifting around your theme. Optional Upmark maintenance after the support period covers monitoring, fixes, a monthly health report and change hours for work like a new section or a seasonal layout. You can stop it any month.

$375/mo (3.5% of the build price a month, includes 3 change hours)

Optional. Starts after the post-launch support period. Cancel any month.

Questions about this product

When is a custom Shopify theme worth it instead of a theme store template?

Usually when the store is established and the template is holding it back. Signs include product pages that cannot show bundles or upsells properly, layouts that need apps to patch them, and a design that looks like other stores. New stores are often better served by a template first, through Shopify Store Build.

Will my existing Shopify apps work with the new theme?

Up to five existing apps are checked with the new theme before it is published. You list the apps the store must keep working with at intake, such as email or reviews apps, and we confirm each one displays and behaves correctly on the duplicate theme. Checking more than five, or rebuilding an app, is quoted separately.

Can my team change page layouts in the custom theme without a developer?

Yes. The theme is built for Online Store 2.0, so your team adds, removes and reorders up to fifteen custom sections in the Shopify theme editor. A written editor guide shows how. New section types or major layout changes later can go through optional maintenance change hours or a Change Quote.

Will customers see the theme while it is being built?

No. The new theme is built and tested on a duplicate theme in your store, so customers keep shopping on your current one. Speed, accessibility, mobile and app checks all happen there. The new theme is published only after you approve it, and your old theme stays in the theme library as a fallback.

How is a Shopify Custom Theme different from Shopify Store Build?

Shopify Store Build sets up a new store on a theme you choose, loads your products and configures payments, shipping and tax. Shopify Custom Theme is for an existing store that needs its own design and code. It does not load products or set up the store. If you are starting from scratch, begin with Shopify Store Build.

Does a custom theme change the Shopify checkout?

No. The theme covers the online store pages, such as home, collection, product, cart and content pages. Shopify's checkout is controlled separately, and Shopify Plus checkout extensions are outside this build. If you need checkout changes on Shopify Plus, start with a Discovery Sprint so the work can be scoped and quoted.

Who owns the code of my custom Shopify theme?

You do. The theme lives in your Shopify store, and the code sits in a Git repository you own, so any Shopify developer can work on it later. There is no theme licence fee to renew. We work through collaborator access, which you can remove from the Shopify admin once the theme is handed over.

Is the custom Shopify theme built to load fast?

Yes, it is built with Core Web Vitals and Shopify theme standards in mind. Before publishing, speed and accessibility are checked on the duplicate theme, and you get a report. Real-world results also depend on your apps, images and content, so no specific score is promised. Heavy apps can slow any theme.
